Coffee is a series of nude self-portraits, painted with coffee on brown kraft paper in different atmospheres, stemming from the artist's investigation of her own skin. The daughter of a Black man and a white woman, she turns her difficulty in understanding her own color into both technical research, on pigments and the painting of Black skin, and ancestral research. Coffee, marked by the history of slavery on Brazil's plantations yet present in food, medicine, ritual baths, smoke cleansings and sacred practices, becomes a material of memory; brown paper becomes a ground for rethinking pardo skin. Guided by the Adinkra principle of Sankofa, the series proposes returning to what was forgotten in order to imagine an Afrofuture.
