Guma Real (2026) is an acrylic painting on canvas rooted in the artist’s lived experience as a Vodunsi within the Tambor de Mina tradition. The work evokes the Guma, the sacred center of the terreiro, where Voduns and Encantados come to “baiar” (dance), as a true space-time of its own. Gathered within this territory, Black women evoke their devotion to the priesthood and, as “wives of the Voduns,” place themselves in service of the sacred and the collective. The halos point to the sacred dimension of these women, whose strength radiates throughout the community, sustaining protection, axé, and collective well-being. In dialogue with The Five Skins, the work understands body, ancestry, and community as inseparable dimensions of an identity built collectively.
