LA ISLA QUE SE REPITE (THE REPEATING ISLAND) (2024) is an acrylic painting that opens a conversation about representation while examining the relationship between subject and territory. Its title draws inspiration from Antonio Benítez-Rojo’s book of the same name. Intertwining island and body generates an interest in the vulnerability of geographical and ideological reinventions. Reading the work from left to right, a stylized palm tree emerges and observes its territory. How do we think about a memory that precedes our existence when we come from an island that does not belong to itself—the archipelago of Puerto Rico? The figure on the right appears sculpted from the earth, rooted yet in motion. It represents how the fragmentation of the subject creates an ambivalent consciousness—one that seeks both escape and return. How does territorial control extend and reverberate, permeating the psychic realm?
