O Cultivo (The Cultivation), by Camille Moreira, is part of the series “Sem Remendos” (Without Patches) and addresses the relationship of Black women with their own bodies and appearance. The work reflects on the beauty standards imposed by a racist society that has historically devalued the features, bodies, and characteristics of Black women, contributing to the internalization of negative perceptions of themselves that can limit their experiences. The yellow flowers blooming from the woman’s head symbolize what is cultivated within: perceptions, feelings, ideas formed around one’s own identity, and possibilities of existence that can emerge beyond imposed limitations. In this sense, the work proposes a reflection on the freedom of Black women: the possibility of imagining themselves beyond the roles and standards historically imposed upon them.
