Nesta obra parto da linguagem de Adriana Varejão como um lugar de herança, mas também de atravessamento. A azulejaria portuguesa. A ornamentação e à repetição de narrativas que se sustentam há séculos — é substituída por ícones da arte ocidental. Essas imagens formam um painel de referências já legitimadas, quase como um muro simbólico. Em vez da carne exposta e visceral, sou eu quem coloco o próprio corpo em cena, rompendo a superfície da pintura e atravessando esse plano histórico. Todos esses anos à margem do “sistema” me deixam com “sangue nos olhos”, com gana de vencer, com urgência de existir e me sustentar no meio artístico. Isso não aparece no rosto, aparece no gesto, na tensão do corpo e na ação de atravessar uma estrutura que nunca foi feita para ser vencida.
In this work, I take Adriana Varejão’s visual language as a place of inheritance, but also of crossing. Portuguese tilework—its ornamentation and the repetition of narratives sustained for centuries—is replaced by icons of Western art. These images form a panel of already legitimized references, almost like a symbolic wall. Instead of exposed, visceral flesh, I place my own body on the scene, breaking through the surface of the painting and crossing this historical plane.
All these years at the margins of the “system” have left me with blood in my eyes—with the determination to succeed, with the urgency to exist and to sustain myself within the art world. This does not appear on my face; it appears in the gesture, in the tension of the body, and in the act of crossing a structure that was never built to be overcome.
