The series brings together images of women of the Afro-Brazilian diaspora engaged in ancestral practices such as painting, weaving, and sewing, understanding these forms of making as community technologies that sustained the building and permanence of Afro-Brazilian communities.
The works are constructed through collage on tree bark, a material that runs through my artistic research as a metaphor for memory and permanence. Just as bark protects the tree from external threats and preserves the marks of its growth, it also becomes a support for reflecting on the knowledge that withstands time, holding histories inscribed in bodies and territories.
In this way, the series shows how the ancestral knowledge of these women preserves collective memories and continues to activate forms of resistance, care, and the imagining of possible futures.
